TEJ3M/4M – Oct 21, 2014

REMINDERS:  PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS  ARE OCT 23 SO PLEASE TRY TO BOOK A TIME WITH ME ASAP.  PROGRESS REPORTS WERE GIVEN OUT ON FRI OCT 17.  STUDENTS ARE TO RETURN THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE PROGRESS REPORT ASAP (SIGNED BY PARENTS IF YOU ARE LESS THAN 18 YEARS OLD).

The grade 12’s (TEJ4M) were to continue with their “race bots” using lego mindstorm.  They are to build a race car of their own design that will be timed in the hall for 30 tiles (the tiles equal to 30ft in length).  On Oct 14 I gave the students 3 resources to help them better understand “Gear Ratios” which will help them design a robot that will be fast.  The 3 resources can be found below.  I gave the students a deadline today to have their robotics completed and their 3 times recorded by Thur Oct 23 before the end of the class.  The students should be completed their “race bots” and ready to work on the next activity.

I showed the grade 11’s (TEJ3M) a few examples of what they were going to be doing today.  The students were to be using their breadboard trainers today.  I showed the students on the digital projector the 3 introductory circuits they were to make.  The circuits they were to make on the breadboard trainer are: 1.) a series circuit; 2.) a parallel circuit; 3.) a series & parallel circuit.  I showed the students an example on the digital projector (I will post the examples below).  Once the students do each of these circuits, they are to call me over to take a picture of their circuit with the iPad.   There were a few students that were completed the 3 introductory circuits above, so I gave them the next 2 circuits to complete.  There 2 circuits are: 4.) 3 Resistors & 3 LED’s; 5.) 7-Segment LED Display.  For the “3 Resistors & 3 LED’s”, the students have to calculate the resistance for each resistor using the resistance example I gave them a few weeks ago (you will find a copy of this below).  We will continue using the breadboard trainers at the start of tomorrow’s class.

Below you will find a copies of the handouts/worksheets that were distributed/assigned in today’s class.

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 1 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Race Car Bot Times (examples) (these are examples of the race bots my students completed in previous years and the times they received for 30 tiles – The TEJ4M students only)

BuildingWithLEGOs (there is some good information about various gear types and ratios in this presentation – The TEJ4M students only)

A Simple Circuit – Using the Breadboard Trainer (Example) (this is an example of a simple circuit using the breadboard trainer – TEJ3M only)

Examples using the Breadboard (Parallel, Series & Parallel Series Circuits) (I showed this to the students in class so they knew the expectations – TEJ3M only)

Examples using the Breadboard (3 Resistors & 3 LED’s and 7-Segment LED Display) (I showed this to the students in class so they knew the expectations – TEJ3M only)

Resistance Example (the students can use this example to help them calculate the resistance of each resistor they are using for the “3 Resistors & 3 LED’s” circuit – TEJ3M students only)
