TEJ3M/4M – Nov 7, 2014

REMINDER:  THE GRADE 11’s (TEJ3M)  ARE TO BRING IN THEIR LAPTOPS (IF THEY ARE ABLE TO) TO SCHOOL SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THE ARDUINO SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON THEM.

I began the class today by giving the students a slip which had missing assignments/worksheets that still need to be completed for the course (not all students got this because there are some students that have handed in everything up to this point).  I talked to the students about where they could find missing assignments and how they could get themselves caught up.  I then asked the students to hand in their worksheets from yesterday (“History of Photography” and “Introduction to Typography”) if they hadn’t already done so.  After talking to the students, I then asked them to separate into their groups (TEJ3M- grade 11’s and TEJ4M – grade 12’s).

The grade 12’s (TEJ4M) were to continue using the lego mindstorm robots.  There were still a few students that needed to complete the first task with their “Explorer Bot”.  The first task is to have their robot go straight until it reaches a wall or an object (using the touch sensor) and then the robot is to reverse and then go left.  The students are to put this into an infinite loop so that it always reverses and then turns left when it runs into something.  Once they finish, they are to show me so I can take a video with the iPad.  The second task is to have their robot go straight until it sees a wall or an object 20cm away (using the ultrasonic/proximity sensor) and then the robot is to reverse and then go left.  The students are to put this into an infinite loop so that it always reverses and then turns left when it sees an object 20cm away.  Once they finish, they are to show me so I can take a video with the iPad.  Once the students are finished both of these tasks, they can then do the track using the touch and ultrasonic/proximity sensors.  I showed them sample track that my students had a few years ago so they knew what to expect (you can see a copy of the sample track below).  This track is to be marked for completion.  Also, the students will have to submit their NXC code for this track as well (must be commented).

The grade 11’s (TEJ3M) should be working on the following circuits: 1.) 3 Resistors & 3 LED’s; 2.) 7-Segment LED Display; 3.) double 7-Segment LED Display; 4.) 555 Timer; 5.) the Logic Gate AND/NAND (Note: there are some students that are finished all of the above circuits).  When the students complete each of these circuits, they are to call me over to take a picture of their circuit with the iPad.  Once the students are finished all of the above circuits, they can try the “Combination Lock” bonus assignment I told them about using Logic Gates (AND/NAND).  I did not make this a formal assignment but just told them verbally what they had to do.  The rest they were responsible on their own.  Once the students are completed everything, they were to work on the “Arduino Boards” which is something I demonstrated to them on Wed Nov 5.  Students were asked ahead of time to bring in a laptop (if possible) so they could begin working with the kits right away.  I asked the students to bring in their own laptop so we don’t run into any problems with the computers at school (Eg./ installing drivers…etc).  I gave the students a document titled “MEGA2560 Stater Kit Tutoral” which has all of the tutorials the students will need to complete the various circuits.  I told them to do “Chapter 3 Blink LED” and “Chapter 4 PWM” today from the “MEGA2560 Stater Kit Tutoral” document.

Below you will find a copies of the handouts/worksheets that were distributed/assigned in today’s class.

TEJ3M & TEJ4M – List of students work not submitted (updated) (The students can look at this list to see which assignments/worksheets they still need to hand in.  Students MUST tell me when they hand something in so I can update the list)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 1 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 2 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 3 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Course Using Touch Sensor and Ultrasonic Sensor (this is a sample course I showed the students which is the track for which they are going to be marked on)

Example of 7 Segment LED & Double 7 Segment LED (I did this example on the white board to help those students do the 7 segment LED and double 7 segment LED – TEJ3M only)

Example of the double 7 Segment LED (I showed the students this example using the breadboard trainer on the digital projector to help the students – TEJ3M only)

Examples using the Breadboard (3 Resistors & 3 LED’s and 7-Segment LED Display) (I showed this to the students so they knew the expectations – TEJ3M only)

Resistance Example (the students can use this example to help them calculate the resistance of each resistor they are using for the “3 Resistors & 3 LED’s” circuit – TEJ3M students only)

Oct 30 – 555 Timer Assignment (I showed the students a video in-class to help the students see a visual example for this assignment.  A copy of this video can be found in the hand-out folder on the school network)

http://www.web-books.com/eLibrary/ON/B1/B1397/026MB1397.html (This is a resource showing the pin setup for the various Logic Gates but the students only have to do AND – TEJ3M only)

http://csebtechnotes.blogspot.ca/2014/06/boolean-algebra-and-logic-gates.html (This is a resource to help the students review the truth tables for various Logic Gates – TEJ3M only)

Example of an AND Logic Gate Wired Properly (I showed the students a video in-class to help the students see a visual example for this assignment.  The video I showed the students was an OR gate, but it is related to what they did.  A copy of this video can be found in the hand-out folder on the school network)

MEGA2560 Starter Kit Tutorial (this document contains the tutorials the students will be working on with the arduino board)

http://arduino.cc/en/main/software (this is the link to the site where you can download the arduino software)

Arduinio Blinking Light (Chapter 3) Picture Example (I showed this to the students in class to help them set up their arduino board with the laptop and breadboard trainer)
