TEJ3M/4M – Nov 4, 2014

IMPORTANT:  THERE IS A SCHEDULE CHANGE TOMORROW (NOV 5) DUE TO THE GRADE 8 ORIENTATION DAY.  PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED REVISED SCHEDULE BELOW.

Revised Schedule for the day – Nov 5, 2014

REMINDER:  THE GRADE 11’s (TEJ3M)  ARE TO BRING IN THEIR LAPTOPS (IF THEY ARE ABLE TO) TO SCHOOL SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THE ARDUINO SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON THEM.

The grade 12’s (TEJ4M) were to continue using the lego mindstorm robots.  Last week I went over the documents titled “Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3″ with the students on the digital projector.  I told the students to use these documents when they are programming their robots because they will need them for the next few activities.  The students were to finish building their “Explorer Bot” which I gave them step by step instructions for (students can make modifications to the instructions if they are missing pieces or would like to do their own design).  Once the students finish building their “Explorer Bot”, the first task is to have their robot go straight until it reaches a wall or an object (using the touch sensor) and then the robot is to reverse and then go left.  The students are to put this into an infinite loop so that it always reverses and then turns left when it runs into something.  Once they finish, they are to show me so I can take a video with the iPad.  There were a few students completed this task, so then I told them the next activity.  The second task is to have their robot go straight until it sees a wall or an object 20cm away (using the ultrasonic/proximity sensor) and then the robot is to reverse and then go left.  The students are to put this into an infinite loop so that it always reverses and then turns left when it sees an object 20cm away.  Once they finish, they are to show me so I can take a video with the iPad.

There were still some grade 11’s (TEJ3M) that were making circuits from last week.  These circuits are: 1.) 3 Resistors & 3 LED’s; 2.) 7-Segment LED Display; 3.) double 7-Segment LED Display;.  For the “3 Resistors & 3 LED’s”, the students have to calculate the resistance for each resistor using the resistance example I gave them a few weeks ago (you will find a copy of this below).  For the 7 segment LED, the students have to make the number 8 and for the double 7 segment LED, the students have to spell the word “hi”.  Once the students have completed all of the above circuits, they to work on the assignment titled “555 Timer Assignment”.  I gave the students a worksheet showing them where they needed to connect certain components and then showed the students a video that I took of a circuit one of my students made last year using the 555 Timer Chip (students also need a capacitor, wires and resistors which I showed the students in class).  There were a few students that were finished the 555 timer as well.  I then gave the students some resources to help them create a circuit using the Logic Gate “AND”.  The students are to use 2 LEDs.  One LED is on and one that is off.   Students can use the example (attached below) to help them correctly wire their Logic Gate Circuit.  When the students complete each of these circuits, they are to call me over to take a picture of their circuit with the iPad.

Below you will find a copies of the handouts/worksheets that were distributed/assigned in today’s class.

Explorer – Step By Step (the students only had a chance to start building this robot in class today – TEJ4M only)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 1 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 2 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Lego NXT robots using NXC tutorial – Part 3 (this is the coding examples for the “Bricx Command Centre” software – The TEJ4M students only)

Example of 7 Segment LED & Double 7 Segment LED (I did this example on the white board to help those students do the 7 segment LED and double 7 segment LED – TEJ3M only)

Example of the double 7 Segment LED (I showed the students this example using the breadboard trainer on the digital projector to help the students – TEJ3M only)

Examples using the Breadboard (3 Resistors & 3 LED’s and 7-Segment LED Display) (I showed this to the students so they knew the expectations – TEJ3M only)

Resistance Example (the students can use this example to help them calculate the resistance of each resistor they are using for the “3 Resistors & 3 LED’s” circuit – TEJ3M students only)

Oct 30 – 555 Timer Assignment (I showed the students a video in-class to help the students see a visual example for this assignment.  A copy of this video can be found in the hand-out folder on the school network)

http://www.web-books.com/eLibrary/ON/B1/B1397/026MB1397.html (This is a resource showing the pin setup for the various Logic Gates but the students only have to do AND – TEJ3M only)

http://csebtechnotes.blogspot.ca/2014/06/boolean-algebra-and-logic-gates.html (This is a resource to help the students review the truth tables for various Logic Gates – TEJ3M only)

Example of an AND Logic Gate Wired Properly (I showed the students a video in-class to help the students see a visual example for this assignment.  The video I showed the students was an OR gate, but it is related to what they did.  A copy of this video can be found in the hand-out folder on the school network)
